Reasons NOT to Build a New Middle School

We Don't Need a New Middle School.

They WANT a New Middle School.

  1. A new building is NOT an investment in education. It will limit our investment in education. See 'General Operations Budget' page

  2. The district has already started using 'general operation funds' for new middle school expenses. Overspending on a new building will restrict curriculum and technology expenditures. Sacrifices will be needed in repairs and advances in our other schools and it may lead to program cuts and salary freezes. See smaller scale examples of 'Past Sacrifices'

  3. The district is already trying to offer an early retirement incentive to employees, discussing cutting the Latin program and cuts to special ed for next year's budget. See 'The 2017 Predicament' page.

  4. The existing middle school will still need renovations for the 4th and 5th graders because the current 'Facilities Committee' has neglected up-keep. At this time, there are no plans to fix anything
prior to the 4th and 5th graders being moved into the current middle school. Will this continue to be neglected because such a large allocation of funds and focus are being put into a new building?
    See 'Additional District Needs' page

  5. Pulling our 4th and 5th graders out of our elementary schools, putting them in the existing middle school and adopting a new grade structure is a poor choice for our children.  See 'Too Many Transition Years' page

  6. Sharing elementary school resources with the 4th and 5th graders at a new location would include traveling faculty such as the gym teacher, art teacher, music teacher, the 'gifted' teacher and the guidance counselor. Is this really an ideal plan?  See 'Sharing Resources' page

  7. Montgomery Avenue has been dangerous for walking students for many years and the UP school district's recent litigation against Upper Hanover Township showed us that their safety concerns are not priority. See 'Safety Concerns' and 'Traffic Studies' pages

  8. Building a new school is unnecessary and will ultimately leave us with a lot of empty classrooms in all our buildings. See 'Enrollment Data' page

  9. The tax impact from this will affect us for over 20 years. Our District CAN and WILL raise our taxes above the State Limit.
See 'ACT 1 Loophole' and 'Tax Impact' pages

  10. Our community can't afford it. See 'Not Best for Our Community' page

  11. The Upper Perkiomen School District can't give us a financial plan or know how taxes will affect us because "there are too many variables". Not acceptable. See 'Financial Planning' page

  12. The majority of Upper Perk residents do not want to build a new middle school and yet the District continues to ignore the community and push it forward. See 'UP Residents Don't Want This' page and The Secret Groundbreaking Ceremony.

  13. The Upper Perkiomen School District has shown little regard for public awareness or community concerns. That is not likely to change while they are raising our taxes even more in the future because they over-spent on an unnecessary new building and don't have enough to pay for other district needs.
